Used BMW 3 Series for sale in Ohio: the buyer's guide

The smartest used 3 Series for most buyers is a 2019 or newer (G20) 330i, with a strong 2.0-liter turbo and a far better cabin than the previous car. If you want real speed, the M340i adds the B58 six and 382 hp for much less than an M3, and the xDrive versions make sense for Ohio winters.

Pick the engine carefully
The 2016 to 2018 340i with the B58 six is the one to find. Early 328i models with the N20 four are known for timing chain guide wear, so look for documented repairs.

What to inspect on a used 3 Series

  • Engine noise at cold start. On older N20 cars, a rattle at start-up can mean worn timing chain guides. Records of the repair are a plus.
  • Oil leaks. Check the oil filter housing gasket and valve cover gasket, common wear items on BMW engines of every generation.
  • Cooling system. Electric water pumps and plastic cooling parts are normal replacement items on older cars. Look for coolant smell or residue.
  • Run-flat tires. Many cars came on run-flats, which ride firmly and cost more. Check tread and age.
  • xDrive and differential service. Ask whether the transfer case and differential fluids have been serviced, especially past 60,000 miles.
  • M3 extras. Check brake wear, tire wear patterns and any track-day history, and confirm the car has not been tuned.

Owning a 3 Series in Ohio

A rear-wheel-drive 330i is perfectly usable in Ohio winters on proper winter tires, but xDrive makes life easier if you cannot switch tires. Salted roads mean an underbody check is worth doing on any car more than a few years old.

Used 3 Series questions

Is the BMW 330i reliable?

The G20 330i has a good reputation for a European sport sedan, provided it has had regular oil services. Expect normal BMW wear items such as gaskets and cooling parts as it ages.

Is the M340i worth the extra money over a 330i?

If you value the smoothness and pace of a six-cylinder, yes. The M340i makes 382 hp against 255 hp in the 330i, and it holds its value well. The 330i is cheaper to buy, insure and fuel.

Should I buy a 3 Series with xDrive in Ohio?

xDrive helps in snow and on wet roads, and most 3 Series sold in Ohio have it. A rear-drive car on winter tires is also a reasonable choice if you prefer the lighter feel.
