Used BMW X5 · Ohio
Used BMW X5 for sale in Ohio: the buyer's guide
For most buyers the best used X5 is a 2019 or newer (G05) xDrive40i with the B58 inline-six, which BMW technicians widely rate as one of the brand's most durable engines. Buy a 2024 or later for the curved display and 375 hp mild-hybrid six, or an xDrive50e if most of your driving is short trips you can do on electricity.

X5 generations, in plain English
BMW names each generation with an internal code. These are the ones you will see in the used market.
Top pick if budget allows
The facelift brought the BMW Curved Display with iDrive 8.5, slimmer lights, a 375 hp mild-hybrid six in the xDrive40i, and the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid with 483 hp.
Best value
A big step up in cabin quality and driver assistance over the F15. The xDrive40i has the 335 hp B58 six. Plug-in xDrive45e arrived for 2021, and the V8 M50i for 2020.
Buy on records
Still a good SUV, and much cheaper. The 35i uses the N55 six, which is reliable with known gasket and cooling-system jobs. The 50i V8 needs a documented service history.
Enthusiast purchase
Old enough that maintenance history matters more than mileage. Early twin-turbo V8 models had well-documented oil consumption and cooling issues.
Which X5 engine to choose
| Version | Engine | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| xDrive40i (2019 to 2023) | 3.0L B58 inline-6, 335 hp | Most buyers: smooth, strong and the simplest to own |
| xDrive40i (2024 and later) | 3.0L B58 inline-6, 48V mild hybrid, 375 hp | Buyers who want the newest cabin and tech |
| xDrive45e (2021 to 2023) | 3.0L six plus electric motor, plug-in hybrid | Short commutes on electricity, if you can charge at home |
| xDrive50e (2024 and later) | 3.0L six plus electric motor, 483 hp combined | Plug-in buyers who also want real performance |
| M50i / M60i | 4.4L twin-turbo V8, 523 hp | Towing and power; budget for higher running costs |
| sDrive40i | Rear-wheel drive B58 six | Rare in Ohio; most buyers here want xDrive for winter |
What to inspect on a used X5
These are the items our technicians check on every X5 before we list it. If you are buying elsewhere, ask the seller or your mechanic about each one.
- Oil leaks. Look for seepage at the oil filter housing gasket and valve cover, common on BMW sixes as rubber seals age.
- Cooling system. Check the coolant level, expansion tank and hoses. Plastic cooling parts are a normal replacement item as these cars age.
- Air suspension. If fitted, the car should sit level after standing overnight and raise and lower smoothly in every mode.
- Tires. Many X5s run staggered sizes or run-flats, which are expensive. Check tread depth and that all four match.
- Panoramic roof drains. Clogged drains can let water into the cabin. Check the headliner and footwells for stains.
- Plug-in battery health. On a 45e or 50e, ask for a high-voltage battery health report and confirm the charging port and cable work.
- Software and recalls. A dealer-level scan should show no stored faults, current software and no open recalls.
Owning an X5 in Ohio
Almost every X5 sold in Ohio has xDrive all-wheel drive, which pairs well with a set of winter tires on separate wheels. Road salt is the bigger long-term enemy, so look underneath for corrosion on brake lines and subframe bolts, especially on older F15 and E70 models.
Buying from us, sales tax is charged at the rate for the county where you live (8.00% in Franklin County, 7.50% in Montgomery, 8.00% in Cuyahoga for Q4 2026), and we file the title and registration for you. In Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit counties the car also needs an E-Check when its registration comes due. See your out-the-door total.

Used X5 questions
What is the best year for a used BMW X5?
For value, a 2019 to 2023 G05 xDrive40i. For the newest technology, a 2024 or later model with the curved display and mild-hybrid six. Condition and service history matter more than the exact year.
Which BMW X5 years should I approach with caution?
Older twin-turbo V8 models, especially from the late 2000s and early 2010s, had well-documented oil consumption and cooling issues. Buy one only with a complete service history and an independent inspection.
Is a used BMW X5 reliable?
A G05 xDrive40i with a documented service history has a good reputation among BMW technicians, largely thanks to the B58 six. Budget for normal BMW wear items such as gaskets, cooling parts and premium tires.
Is the X5 plug-in hybrid worth it?
If you can charge at home and most days are short trips, yes. The xDrive50e is rated by the EPA at up to 39 miles of electric range. Ohio charges plug-in hybrids an extra $150 a year at registration.
